２０２４年春から英検の問題が一部リニューアルされました。本記事では、サンプル問題を解きながら、英検準１級の新形式ライティングの「要約」問題で高得点を取るためのコツを紹介していきます。
準１級を受ける予定の人は、実際に以下のサンプル問題に取り組んで本番に備えてください！
サンプル問題
●Instructions: Read the artcile below and summarize it in your own words as far as possible in English.
●Suggested length:60-70 words
Rock climbing has become a popular activity for people to do in their free time. However, the first people to climb rocks may have needed to get from one place to another, and not for fun. Now, people climb as a hobby and to stay physically fit. Some people decided to create places to climb indoors, which enable them to practice climbing even if conditions outside are bad.
Rock climbing requires equipment such as ropes and special shoes. Climbers use ropes to attach themselves to the rocks. The ropes help to prevent climbers from being seriously injured if they fall. The special shoes help prevent climbers’ feet from slipping on the rocks.
Climbing can help to increase physical and mental strength. Climbers need to be strong to hold onto rocks, and they also have to think carefully about where they put their hands and feet. Researchers have found that people experience stress while they are climbing. However, it has also been found that climbers get very strong feelings of relief when they finish. 問題への答え方
ここから答え方の解説をしていきます。まず本文の日本語訳を見てみましょう。
ロッククライミングは、人々が自由な時間に行う人気のアクティビティとなっている。しかし、最初にロッククライミングをした人たちは、ある場所から別の場所へ移動する必要があったのかもしれない。今では、人々は趣味として、また健康維持のためにロッククライミングをする。屋内でクライミングができる場所を作り、外の環境が悪くてもクライミングの練習ができるようにした人もいる。

本文の内容を理解できたら、次は回答を考えましょう。
《ステップ１》
全文を読んで、話の「主題」や「大枠」をつかむ
全体を読んで、話の「主題」や「大枠（おおわく）」をつかみましょう。
「この話は、何についての話か？」
「結局、なにを言いたいのか？」
というポイントをまずおさえます。
「主題」をおさえずに要約に入ってしまうと、どの部分が重要で、どの部分が重要でないか、の判断ができません。なので、まず全体を通して読んで「大枠」をおさえて、何がテーマの話かをしっかり把握します。
上記のサンプル問題では、「ロッククライミング」についての話で、「健康上のメリットがある」というのが大枠です。
《ステップ２》
どの部分を要約に使うか決めて、マルで囲む
次は、ステップ１で押さえた主題や大枠をもとに、要約文に使えるパーツを本文中から集めます。重要な部分をマルで囲んでいきます。
ここでは、マルの代わりに太字にしてあります。

《ステップ３》
一段落ずつまとめていく
次は、ステップ２で集めたパーツを使って文を作成します。
１段落目では、
“Now, people climb as a hobby and to stay physically fit”
“practice climbing even if conditions outside are bad”
の２か所をマルで囲みました。
“Thanks to ~”（～のおかげで）という表現を加えて、上記の二文をつなげます。
“Now, people climb rocks as a hobby and to stay physically fit. Thanks to the indoor facility, they can practice climbing even if conditions outside are bad.”
本文中に”Some people decided to create places to climb indoors”という文がありますが、これを全部使うと文字数が多くなってしまいます。なので、”Thanks to the infoor facility”（屋内施設のおかげで）という表現にしたことで、コンパクトにまとまりました。
次に第２段落では、
“Rock climbing requires equipment such as ropes and special shoes.”
“The ropes help to prevent climbers from being seriously injured if they fall.”
“The special shoes help prevent climbers’ feet from slipping on the rocks.”
の３か所を選びました。
関係代名詞”which”を使って上の三文をつなげます。
“Rock climbing requires equipment such as ropes and special shoes which prevent climbers from serious injury or accident.”
となります。
第３段落は、
“Researchers have found that…”
“Climbing can help to increase physical and mental strength.”
“climbing can be a good way to help reduce stress.”
の３か所です。
研究者たちが発見したことを、”not only A but also B”（AだけでなくBも）を使って、「ロッククライミングが、心身を強化してくれるだけでなく、ストレスも軽減してくれる」という文にします。
“Researchers have found that climbing can be a good way not only to increase physical and mental strength, but also to help reduce stress.”
となります。
ここまでの要約を全部つなげます。

《ステップ４》
本文中とは違う単語・表現に変える
このステップは英検２級の要約には必要ありませんが、準１級から必要になるので注意が必要です！
ここで、もう一度準１級の指示を見てみましょう。
“summarize it in your own words”
とあります。つまり、「自分の言葉で要約しなさい」ということです。
本文中の単語・表現をそのまま使うのではなく、同じ意味だけど違う単語・表現を使って要約文を書くことが求められます。
ただ、指示文には
“…as far as possible…”
とも書かれています。「できる限り自分の言葉で」ということです。なので、ステップ３までに要約した文をもとにして、そこに出てくる単語や表現を、自分が知っている別の単語・表現で置き換えてみます。できる範囲で。
まず第一段落。変える箇所を太字にします。
Now, people climb rocks as a hobby and to stay physically fit. Thanks to the indoor facility, they can practice climbing even if conditions outside are bad.
この “as a hobby”は「趣味として」ですが、これを “at their leisure”「余暇に」という表現に変えてみます。
また、”if conditions outside are bad”は「屋外の天気が悪ければ」という意味ですが、これを “regardelss of the outside weather”「外の天気に関係なく」という表現に変えます。
ちなみに、上記は唯一の正解ではなく、他にもいろいろな単語が表現で言い換えることができます。自分が知っているものを使って言い換えましょう。
さらに、 第２・第３段落も見てみます。
Rock climbing requires equipment such as ropes and special shoes which prevent climbers from serious injury or accident.
Researchers have found that climbing can be a good way not only to increase physical and mental strength, but also to help reduce stress.
“requires”「必要とする」を”calls for”「必要とする」に
“prevent A from B”「AをBから妨げる」を”protect A from B”「AをBから守る」に
“Researchers have found that…”「研究者たちは～を見つけた」を”According to researches,”「研究によれば」に
それぞれ置き換えます。
そして全部つなげて解答の完成です！
サンプル問題の回答例
以下が解答例になります。６９語ですので “60-70 words” にぴったりおさまります。仮に字数が少しオーバーしたとしても、内容が自然であれば減点されないと思います。
Now, people climb rocks at their leisure and to stay physically fit. Thanks to the indoor facility, they can practice climbing regardless of the outside weather.
Rock climbing calls for equipment such as ropes and special shoes which protect climbers from serious injury or accident.
